128 Mbit NOR flash for firmware storage
The S25FL128LAGBHV020 is a 128 Mbit SPI NOR flash from Infineon's FL-L series, organized as 16M x 8 bits. It stores the bootloader, RTOS, and application image for an MCU-based design — the 128 Mbit density holds a typical Cortex-M firmware image plus an OTA staging copy. The SPI interface supports Quad I/O and QPI modes, with a 133 MHz clock frequency. In quad-I/O read, the effective throughput reaches 532 MHz (66.5 MB/s), limited by the host controller's SPI peripheral speed rather than the flash itself.
Housed in a 24-ball BGA (8x6 mm body, 0.80 mm ball pitch), the package saves board space compared to an SOIC-16 wide-body. The 0.80 mm pitch requires a 4-layer PCB for fan-out — two-layer boards cannot route all balls without via-in-pad. The 2.7 V minimum allows operation from a 3.0 V battery near end-of-life without a boost converter. This covers outdoor telecom cabinets, motor drive enclosures, and under-hood automotive modules where the ambient temperature plus self-heating reaches 85-105°C.
