55 V, 42 A N-channel — the D-Pak workhorse for switching and load control
The IRLR2905TRPBF: This is the part you reach for when a TO-220 through-hole won't fit the board assembly flow but you still need the current capability of a D-Pak.
Gate charge and switching — 48 nC at 5 V
Total gate charge is 48 nC at 5 V. Input capacitance is 1700 pF at 25 V drain-source. Drive voltage for minimum Rds(on) is 10 V; the part is also characterised at 4 V for logic-level drive.
Thermal and temperature — 175°C junction, 110 W dissipation
The junction temperature range is -55°C to 175°C, which covers military and industrial extremes. Maximum power dissipation is 110 W at case temperature 25°C — derate above that per the datasheet curve. In a D-Pak, the thermal path runs through the exposed tab to the PCB copper; a 1-inch-square copper pad on a 2-oz board gives roughly 50°C/W junction-to-ambient. Plan the copper area for your actual load current and ambient temperature.
