The Infineon IRL540NPBF is a logic-level N-channel HEXFET MOSFET in the standard TO-220-3 through-hole package. It delivers 36A continuous drain current at 25°C case temperature, with a 100V drain-to-source breakdown voltage that suits 48V battery systems, 72V motor drives, and 24V industrial power rails with ample derating margin. The 44mOhm maximum on-resistance at 18A and 10V gate drive keeps conduction losses manageable for a TO-220 device — expect about 23W dissipation at full current before the thermal derating curve applies.
Logic-level gate drive — 5V compatible
The IRL540NPBF is specified with a maximum gate threshold voltage of 2V at 250µA drain current, and the drive voltage range covers 4V to 10V for achieving the rated Rds(on). This means a standard 5V logic output from a microcontroller or gate-driver IC can turn it fully on — no need for a 10V gate supply or level-shifter in many low-side switching applications. The ±16V maximum gate-source rating provides headroom against transients on a 12V gate-drive rail.
The TO-220-3 (TO-220AB) through-hole package is the workhorse for board-mounted power semiconductors. The tab is the drain terminal; mount it to a heatsink with a thermal pad or mica insulator.
