In a switching power supply — which is the natural application for a 60 V trench MOSFET — the D2PAK tab carries the heat. A good via stitch under the tab to a copper plane is the difference between 92 W and a junction that runs away at 40 W.
Reworking the D2PAK — what to watch
The D2PAK (TO-263) is a surface-mount tab package. The tab is the drain — it's also the main thermal path. When you're pulling this off a board with hot air, preheat the board to 125°C minimum before you hit the tab with the nozzle. The tab sinks heat fast; without preheat you'll cook the plastic body trying to melt the solder on the tab. Replacing it: clean the pad, apply fresh solder paste or tacky flux, and reflow with a bottom-side preheater if you have one. The tab's solder joint is the one that matters — the three leads are secondary.
That's the full military temperature range — this part can sit in an engine bay, a downhole tool, or a satellite power bus. The 175°C junction limit gives headroom for high-ambient designs where the case runs hot. Just remember: the 57 A rating is at 25°C case; derate linearly above that, and at 100°C case you're looking at roughly 40 A usable.
