40 V, 180 A, 3.7 mOhm — the high-side switch that doesn't need a heatsink the size of a brick
The IRF1404ZPBF: This is a through-hole TO-220AB device built for low-voltage, high-current switching — battery management, DC motor drives, automotive alternator rectification, and high-power DC-DC converters where every milliohm of conduction loss costs watts in heat.
The total gate charge is 150 nC at 10 V. The gate driver must source and sink this charge to switch without cross-conduction losses. At 100 kHz switching, the gate-drive power loss is roughly 0.5 × Qg × Vgs × fsw — about 0.75 W at 100 kHz, 10 V drive. That is manageable with a proper driver IC, but a 1 A gate resistor will slow the edges noticeably.
175 °C junction — where this part lives that others don't
That extra 25°C headroom matters in engine-bay electronics, industrial oven controls, or downhole instrumentation where ambient temperatures push past 125°C and the junction climbs another 30-40°C above that. The 200 W dissipation rating at case temperature assumes the TO-220 tab is bolted to a heatsink — without one, the junction hits that limit at a fraction of the rated current.
