That conduction loss stays under 0.65 W at 40 A RMS in a typical 12 V rail, which means the heatsink can be small or the PCB copper does the work. But the 200 nC total gate charge at 10 V means the gate driver needs to source and sink that charge fast — a 1 A driver gives roughly 200 ns rise time, acceptable for 50–100 kHz switching; above that, budget a stronger driver or accept higher crossover loss.
D2PAK package — rework and thermal reality
Under a hot-air station, the large tab soaks heat quickly; preheat the board to 125°C before rework, or the solder on the tab reflows before the leads wet, trapping voids.
For dual-sourcing or a drop-in alternative, the IRF1404ZPBF is a common cross-shop candidate — same 40 V, 162 A rating in the same D2PAK footprint, but with Zener-gate protection that slightly raises the gate threshold. Check the gate drive voltage against your circuit before swapping.
