600 V, 48 A, 60 mOhm — the hard-switching sweet spot in TO-247
The IPW60R060P7XKSA1: The 60 mOhm Rds(on) at 10 V gate drive is specified at 15.9 A drain current.
Junction temperature envelope and what it permits
The 150°C Tj(max) and 4 V maximum gate threshold at 800 µA drain current are specified in the datasheet.
Package and mounting — the TO-247 thermal interface
The PG-TO247-3 package is a standard through-hole TO-247 with a large exposed drain tab. The 164 W power dissipation assumes a case temperature held at 25°C — in practice the thermal resistance to the heatsink dominates. A 0.5 mm-thick silicone pad or 0.1 mm thermal grease layer between the tab and the heatsink is typical; the mounting hole accepts an M3 screw torqued to 0.6 N·m. The ±20 V maximum gate rating is generous, but the gate is unprotected against fast transients — a 10 V zener clamp across gate-source on the PCB is cheap insurance if the layout has long gate traces.
