High-side switch with integrated protection for 12 V loads
The Infineon IPS5451S is a single-channel high-side N-channel power switch rated for loads from 5.5 V to 18 V, delivering up to 3.5 A continuous output. Its 19 mOhm typical Rds(on) keeps conduction losses low in a 12 V automotive or industrial power distribution rail. The switch integrates fixed current limiting, open-load detection, and over-temperature shutdown — three fault protections that reduce external sense circuitry and simplify the BOM for rugged applications.
At 3.5 A, the 19 mOhm typical on-resistance produces about 233 mW of I²R loss. The Rds(on) is specified at 25 °C junction; actual resistance rises with temperature per the normalised curve in the datasheet, so derate the continuous current if the ambient exceeds 85 °C or the PCB copper area is limited.

The IPS5451S is supplied in a TO-263-5 (D²Pak) package with 4 leads plus a tab. The package ships in Tube form. For reflow assembly, the moisture sensitivity level (MSL) should be verified from the latest Infineon product information — the tab solder joint carries the output current and requires a full fillet.
