High-side switch with integrated protection for 24 V loads
The Infineon IPS521G is a single-channel high-side N-channel power switch designed for general-purpose load switching in 12 V to 24 V systems. It integrates auto-restart after a fault clears, fixed current limiting, open-load detection, and over-temperature shutdown — reducing the external protection component count around the load.
80 mOhm on-resistance and 1.6 A continuous rating
With a typical Rds(on) of 80 mOhm, the IPS521G drops about 128 mV at 1.6 A — manageable in a 5.5 V to 35 V load supply range. The 1.6 A maximum output is the continuous limit; pulsed loads can exceed this within the SOA, but the fixed current-limiting threshold clamps the peak. The 8-SOIC package (0.154-inch body width) dissipates the conduction heat through the leadframe. At 1.6 A continuous, the power loss is roughly 205 mW; the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of the SOIC-8 (~110 °C/W typical) keeps the die below the 150 °C maximum junction temperature in still air up to about 125 °C ambient.
Fault protection and auto-restart behaviour
The auto-restart feature means the switch cycles on and off after an over-temperature or current-limit fault, re-trying the load at a low duty cycle until the fault clears. This is useful for driving lamps or motors where a temporary overload is expected and automatic recovery is preferred over latch-off. Open-load detection flags a disconnected output when the switch is off — a diagnostic signal for the system controller. The non-inverting On/Off interface simplifies logic-level drive: a high on the input turns the output on, no external level shifter needed.
