Low-side smart switch for 24 V industrial and automotive loads
The Infineon IPS1041RPBF is a single-channel low-side smart switch in a D-Pak (TO-252-3) surface-mount package. It integrates an N-channel power MOSFET with a gate driver and protection logic, so it switches a grounded load on the high side of the supply rail without an external driver. The switch handles a maximum load voltage of 28 V and delivers up to 2.2 A continuous output current, with a typical on-resistance of 80 mOhm. Built-in fault protection includes current limiting and over-temperature shutdown, which simplifies the BOM by eliminating external sense resistors and thermal monitoring.
The 28 V maximum load voltage covers nominal 24 V industrial buses and 12 V automotive systems with headroom for load-dump transients. The 2.2 A continuous output rating suits solenoid valves, relays, incandescent lamps, and small DC motors that draw steady current within that envelope. At 2.2 A and 80 mOhm Rds(on), the conduction loss is about 0.39 W — the D-Pak's copper pad area on the PCB must be sized to keep the junction below 150°C. The switch is a low-side configuration: the load connects between the positive supply and the switch output, and the switch sinks current to ground. The input is non-inverting and the interface is a simple On/Off logic signal — no external Vcc supply is required, as the gate drive is self-powered from the load voltage.
For new designs, a pin-compatible alternative from the same Infineon smart-switch family should be evaluated — the IPS1041 series shares the same footprint and basic function, but the exact replacement depends on the load current and protection requirements of the application.
