When the load needs a protected low-side switch, not a bare MOSFET
The IPS0151STRL is a single-channel low-side N-channel power switch from Infineon, built to drive resistive and inductive loads up to 3.8 A continuous at a load voltage of 35 V max. Its 20 mOhm typical Rds(on) keeps conduction losses low enough that the D2PAK package can handle the dissipation without forced airflow in many industrial and automotive environments. Unlike a discrete MOSFET, this part integrates current-limiting and over-temperature fault protection — so a stalled motor or shorted solenoid won't cascade into a board fire.
Self-biased architecture — no gate-drive supply needed
The switch is controlled by a simple On/Off logic input (Non-Inverting) and does not require a Vcc supply — the gate charge is drawn from the load voltage itself. This simplifies the BOM: no separate 12 V rail for gate drive, no bootstrap diode. The 1:1 input-to-output ratio means one logic pin controls one load channel, with no address decoding or serial interface overhead.
Temperature range and protection — where this switch survives
The fixed current-limiting threshold and over-temperature shutdown are autonomous — they trigger without software intervention, which matters when the MCU is still booting or has crashed.
Package reality for the board and the reflow profile
The 0.50 mm pitch on the leads is standard for this package class; a two-layer board with a 1 oz copper pour under the tab handles the dissipation up to the 3.8 A ceiling in still air.
