600 V, 12 A CoolMOS P7 — active, in production, no LTB risk
Gate charge is 18 nC at 10 V, which means a modest gate driver can switch it cleanly at frequencies common in power-factor-correction and flyback stages.
D²Pak rework — the tab is your friend
The PG-TO263-3 (D²Pak) package is a surface-mount part with a large exposed drain tab. That tab is the primary thermal path — it needs a good solder joint to the board copper pour to keep junction temperature under 150 °C. Under a hot-air station the tab soaks heat; preheat the board to 100–120 °C before attempting removal, and use a wide nozzle to cover the tab area. The tab also makes visual inspection of the solder joint straightforward — if the fillet looks dull or incomplete, the thermal resistance climbs fast.
