The Cypress FM25W256-GTR is a 256Kbit non-volatile FRAM memory in an 8-SOIC surface-mount package, communicating over SPI at up to 20 MHz.
20 MHz SPI — no dead cycles for writes
The 20 MHz SPI clock is the headline throughput spec. Unlike serial Flash or EEPROM where a write command ties up the bus for milliseconds, FRAM writes complete in a single SPI transaction at the full clock rate. For a firmware engineer doing a parameter-store update, that means no blocking wait loops or polling for a write-complete flag. The bus stays free for the next read or write immediately.
The wide supply range is the feature that saves a BOM line item. If your system runs a 3.3V MCU but has a 5V sensor rail, this part connects directly to either without a regulator or level shifter. Drop it on a 3.3V rail and the SPI signals are 3.3V-compatible; on a 5V rail the inputs tolerate 5V logic. No separate VIO pin to route.
No hidden thermal issues at the low end; FRAM retains data across the full range.
For a production BOM, this part does not force a redesign cycle due to obsolescence. ROHS3 compliant, no conflict minerals concern.
