The Cypress FM25V01A-GTR is a 128Kbit non-volatile FRAM (Ferroelectric RAM) memory organized as 16K x 8 bits, communicating over an SPI bus at up to 40 MHz. FRAM technology combines the fast write speed and endurance of SRAM with the non-volatility of Flash — writes are effectively instantaneous and unlimited (10^14 cycles typical), with no write-page buffers or erase cycles. This makes it a strong fit for applications that log data frequently or need to retain configuration parameters across power cycles without the wear-leveling overhead required by EEPROM or Flash.
SPI bus at 40 MHz — timing margin and throughput
The 40 MHz SPI clock is the fastest in the F-RAM™ 128Kbit class. At this speed a 16K x 8 read or write completes in roughly 400 µs (excluding command overhead), which is orders of magnitude faster than a comparable EEPROM. The SPI interface is compatible with 3.3V microcontrollers directly — the 2V to 3.6V supply range covers both 3.3V and 2.5V logic levels without a level shifter. For a firmware engineer, this means no wait-state configuration or write-cycle polling; the memory is ready for the next operation immediately after the last clock edge.
