Synchronous FIFO at 100 MHz — what the ratings mean
This is a synchronous FIFO with a 100 MHz data rate and an 8 ns access time. The 100 MHz clock means the FIFO can accept or deliver one 18-bit word every 10 ns, which matches the bus speed of many mid-range DSPs, FPGAs, and ASICs. The 8 ns access time is the time from the read-enable edge to valid data on the output bus — budget this into your setup/hold timing at the receiving device. The 64K x 18 memory depth gives 1.125 Mbits of buffering, enough for a few thousand 18-bit samples or a line of video data in a 640-pixel display. The supply range is 3.0 V to 3.6 V, typical for 3.3 V logic families. The maximum supply current is 30 mA, so the power dissipation is under 100 mW — no special thermal management needed in the 64-LQFP package.
Retransmit and programmable flags — design flexibility
The CY7C4285V-10ASC supports retransmit capability, which lets you reset the read pointer to the beginning of the stored data without clearing the FIFO — useful for retrying a data packet after a transmission error. It also supports programmable flags, so you can set the almost-full and almost-empty thresholds to match your system's watermarks. Expansion is possible in depth or width, meaning multiple FIFOs can be cascaded for larger buffers or wider data paths.
