What this HITFET® low-side switch does on your board
The BTS3080EJXUMA1 is a single-channel low-side N-channel power switch from Infineon's HITFET® series, designed to drive resistive, inductive, or lamp loads up to 10 A continuous on a 31 V max supply rail. The input is PWM-compatible with a non-inverting logic level of 3 V to 5.5 V, so a 3.3 V or 5 V microcontroller can drive it directly without a level shifter. Fault protection includes fixed current limiting, over-temperature shutdown, and over-voltage clamping — the auto-restart feature means the switch tries to turn back on after a fault clears, which is handy for driving solenoids or motors that might stall momentarily.
Why the 80 mOhm Rds(on) and 10 A rating matter for your BOM
Compared to the HITFET® sibling BTS142DATMA1 (23 mOhm typical Rds(on), 4.6 A max, 42 V load), the BTS3080EJXUMA1 trades a higher on-resistance for a higher current ceiling and a lower load voltage limit. The BTS142DATMA1 is a better fit for a 42 V bus with moderate current, while the BTS3080EJXUMA1 handles a 31 V bus at twice the current — choose based on your load's voltage and the thermal budget from the Rds(on) times the RMS current squared. The 80 mOhm typical Rds(on) at 25°C rises with junction temperature — expect roughly 1.6× at 150°C. For a 10 A continuous load, that means the switch dissipates 8 W at 25°C and about 12.8 W at the hot end. The exposed pad on the PG-TDSO-8-31 package is mandatory for that thermal path; a board without a thermal land will hit the 150°C ceiling quickly.
