It carries a standard gate drive input and a low 50 nC gate charge, which keeps the drive circuit simple and reduces switching losses at moderate frequencies.
Switching losses and the turn-off energy trade-off
The switching energy numbers — 260 µJ turn-on, 3.45 mJ turn-off under the test condition of 480 V, 18 A, 23 Ω gate resistor, 15 V gate drive — reveal a part optimized for low on-state voltage (1.6 V typical at 15 V, 18 A) rather than symmetric switching. The turn-off energy dominates total loss, so if you are running above a few tens of kHz, budget for a snubber or consider a softer-switching topology. The 22 ns turn-on delay and 540 ns turn-off delay give you the timing window for dead-time setting in a half-bridge.
The D2PAK is a surface-mount package with a large copper tab on the bottom for heat sinking. The tab is the collector connection, so the PCB layout must handle both thermal dissipation and isolation — typically a large copper pour on the drain node with vias to an internal plane. Rework is doable with hot air if you preheat the board; the tab soaks heat fast, so use a wide nozzle and a temperature profile that won't lift the pad.
