5A adjustable regulator in a compact MSOP
The Maxim MAX8704EUB is a low-voltage linear regulator delivering up to 5A of output current from a single positive supply, with an adjustable output voltage range from 0.5V up to the input voltage maximum of 5.5V. It also supports fixed output presets at 1.2V and 1.5V via pin-strapping, which simplifies BOM when a standard rail is needed.
What the 5A rating means for your rail budget
A 5A output capability puts this regulator in the class that can power a multi-core processor, an FPGA core rail, or a bank of high-current ASICs without needing external pass transistors or a second regulator in parallel. The quiescent current is 3 mA, which is modest for this current level — the efficiency hit at light load is small, but this is still a linear regulator, so the thermal dissipation at 5A with a moderate dropout will be significant. Plan the PCB copper area and airflow accordingly.
Protection and control — what is built in
The MAX8704EUB integrates over-current protection, over-temperature shutdown, short-circuit protection, and under-voltage lockout (UVLO). On the control side it includes a current-limit adjustment pin, an enable pin, a power-good flag output, a power-limit function, and a soft-start feature. This means a design can eliminate external supervisor ICs, current-sense resistors, and sequencing logic for many applications — the regulator handles its own fault monitoring and startup ramp.
The small footprint is an advantage on dense boards, but at 5A output the thermal path through the package leads and PCB copper is critical — the datasheet layout recommendations for the exposed pad and via pattern should be followed closely. The part is surface-mount only.
