What this I²C expander does on the board
The MAX7312AAG+ is a 16-bit GPIO expander from Maxim Integrated that connects to a host controller over an I²C or SMBus interface running up to 400 kHz. Each of the 16 I/O pins can be configured independently as input or push-pull output, sourcing 31 mA or sinking 43 mA — enough to drive LEDs, optocouplers, or small relays without external buffers. A dedicated interrupt output (IRQ) signals the host when any input changes, eliminating constant polling and freeing up MCU cycles for other tasks. The part includes a power-on reset (POR) feature that forces all outputs to a known state at startup. Supply range spans 2 V to 5.5 V.
The 24-SSOP package (5.3 mm body width) keeps the footprint compact enough for dense multilayer boards, and the 0.209-inch pitch matches standard land patterns for automated assembly.
