The MAX5987A (this part) is a single-channel 802.3af PD controller with an integrated DC/DC switch and auxiliary sense. The MAX5987B is a variant that typically adds support for 802.3at (PoE+) higher power or changes the switching frequency — the exact delta is in the datasheet. For 802.3af-only designs up to 6.49 W, the MAX5987A is the correct choice.
The MAX5987AETE+T is specified for 802.3af (PoE) and is rated for a maximum power of 6.49 W. It does not support the higher 25.5 W power level of 802.3at. Connecting it to a PoE+ PSE will not damage the controller — the PSE will detect it as an 802.3af PD and deliver only up to the Class 0–3 power budget. For PoE+ designs, look at the MAX5987B or a dedicated 802.3at PD controller.
