-9V to -100V supply — this is a negative-rail controller
The MAX5900AAEUT-T is a Maxim Integrated Simple Swapper™ hot swap controller designed for negative-voltage backplanes. Its supply range of -9V to -100V targets -48V telecom and -72V base-station power distribution, where a single controller manages the inrush current and fault protection on a -48V rail. The part does not include an internal switch — it drives an external N-channel MOSFET pass transistor, so the current rating is set by the external FET and heatsink, not the controller itself.
Programmable protection — what each feature controls
The MAX5900AAEUT-T gives the designer control over Auto Retry, Circuit Breaker, Current Limit, Fault Timeout, Latched Fault, Slew Rate, and UVLO. Slew rate programming sets the gate turn-on ramp to limit capacitive inrush; the circuit breaker threshold and current limit define the overcurrent trip point. Fault timeout and latched fault select whether the part retries automatically or stays off after a fault. UVLO sets the undervoltage lockout threshold, which is critical for sequencing on a -48V rail that may sag during battery backup.
Active lifecycle — no last-time-buy pressure
There is no EOL notice or last-time-buy window to manage. The RoHS compliance is listed as non-compliant, so verify your assembly line's exemption allowance if you require lead-free processing.
SOT-23-6 package — footprint and thermal note
The MAX5900AAEUT-T comes in a 6-pin SOT-23 surface-mount package (Supplier Device Package SOT-23-6). The controller itself dissipates very little power — the 500 µA supply current keeps self-heating negligible — so the SOT-23 is adequate for the controller. The external MOSFET carries the load current and needs its own thermal management. The operating temperature range is -40°C to 85°C ambient, which covers indoor telecom racks and outdoor cabinets with passive cooling.
