Product details

Field-swap fit: 2.5 Mbps on a DIP

The MAX490EEPA+ is a full-duplex RS-422/RS-485 transceiver from Analog Devices, pushing 2.5 Mbps on a single 5 V rail. That data rate is enough for most Modbus RTU and Profibus DP fieldbuses at reasonable cable lengths — you are not speed-limited unless the bus runs past a few hundred metres at full rate. Full-duplex operation means separate pairs for transmit and receive, so the protocol layer does not waste time turning the bus around. The 70 mV receiver hysteresis cleans up noise on long drops without external filtering.

The 8-pin DIP (0.300" width) is socket-friendly — you can swap it on site with a basic extraction tool and no hot-air station. Supply tolerance is 4.75 V to 5.25 V, which covers a 5 V rail with typical regulation margins. The 1/1 driver/receiver count suits point-to-point or multi-drop with one talker at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is MAX490EEPA+ a direct replacement for MAX490CPA?

The MAX490CPA is the commercial-temperature (0°C to 70°C) version of the same die in the same 8-pin DIP package. The MAX490EEPA+ extends the operating range to -40°C to 85°C and is ROHS3 compliant. Electrically they are identical — same data rate, same supply, same pinout. You can drop the E suffix part into a socket originally populated with the CPA variant and get wider temperature margin.

Can MAX490EEPA+ replace MAX488CPA?

The MAX488 is a half-duplex RS-485 transceiver; the MAX490EEPA+ is full duplex. Pinout differs — the MAX488 uses a single differential pair for both directions, while the MAX490 has separate TX and RX pairs. They are not pin-compatible. If the board layout expects a half-duplex part, the MAX490 will not fit without rewiring.
