What this current sense amplifier is built for
The MAX44284HAUT+T is a single-channel current sense amplifier from Analog Devices, designed to measure current through a shunt resistor and output a proportional voltage. Its 1.8 kHz -3dB bandwidth means it is suited for DC or slowly varying currents — think battery monitoring, motor current sensing at low PWM frequencies, or power-rail supervision — not for fast-switching loops like a high-frequency buck converter. The 2 µV typical input offset voltage allows the use of a small-value shunt resistor — as low as a few milliohms — while still resolving milliampere-level current changes. That saves power dissipation in the shunt and keeps the PCB layout compact. Supply current is 21 µA typical, low enough that the amplifier can be left powered continuously in a battery-operated device without a significant drain on the cell.
Supply voltage range and temperature grade
The supply span runs from 1.7 V minimum to 5.5 V maximum, covering single-cell Li-ion, 3.3 V, and 5 V rails without an extra regulator. Input bias current is 2 nA typical, which introduces negligible error across the shunt even when the shunt resistance is in the tens of ohms. That matters when the sense resistor is sized for low-side current monitoring with a small voltage drop.
That is a standard, widely used footprint that fits easily on a two-layer board. The tape-and-reel or cut-tape options cover both prototyping and production volumes. Surface-mount mounting is the only option; no through-hole variant exists. The small package means the thermal pad is the SOT-23 body itself — no exposed paddle to solder, so the power dissipation is limited by the copper area on the PCB. For continuous operation near 125°C, ensure adequate copper pour under the part.
