6A peak drive with 25ns edges — what that means for your switching stage
The MAX4420EPA+ delivers 6A peak source and sink current with a typical 25ns rise and fall time into a MOSFET gate. That edge rate charges the gate capacitance fast enough to keep the switching transition short, which directly reduces cross-conduction losses in a half-bridge or synchronous buck stage. For a 10 nC gate charge, the driver transitions the gate in roughly 1.7 ns at 6A — the actual edge at the FET gate is slower due to package inductance and gate resistance, but the driver itself is not the bottleneck. The single low-side channel drives either N-channel or P-channel MOSFETs. Non-inverting input means the output follows the input logic level — no inversion to account for in the control loop. Supply range of 4.5V to 18V covers 5V and 12V gate drive rails commonly used in industrial power supplies and motor drives.
Logic interface and temperature grade
Logic thresholds are 0.8V VIL and 2.4V VIH, which means the driver accepts 3.3V and 5V logic directly from an MCU or PWM controller without external level shifters. Housed in an 8-DIP through-hole package with 0.300-inch (7.62mm) body width. The DIP footprint is breadboard-friendly for prototyping and remains common in legacy industrial control boards where through-hole assembly is preferred over SMT rework.
ROHS3 compliant — the part contains no restricted substances above the threshold limits under EU Directive 2011/65/EU.
