Technical details

What this current sense amplifier does on the board

The MAX4081TASA+T is a single-circuit, high-side current sense amplifier from Analog Devices, designed to measure current by sensing the voltage drop across a shunt resistor placed between the supply rail and the load. The 150 kHz bandwidth sets the usable signal frequency for current monitoring — fast enough to capture PWM ripple in a motor drive or load-step response in a power supply, but not intended for RF or high-speed data links.

Package, footprint, and shelf life

Store the reels dry — the MSL level is not stated in this record, but standard SOIC-8 is typically MSL 1 or 2; if unsure, bake per J-STD-033 before reflow.

Temperature grade and operating envelope

The 125°C upper limit covers under-hood or engine-bay deployment where the local ambient can reach 105°C with self-heating margin. The 103 µA supply current keeps the quiescent draw low enough for always-on monitoring in battery-powered systems — the amplifier itself does not dominate the sleep budget.

DC accuracy and input characteristics

For a typical 10 mΩ shunt carrying 10 A, the sense voltage is 100 mV; the 100 µV offset contributes 0.1% error before any gain-stage drift. The 5 µA bias flows through the shunt and adds a small voltage drop — negligible for shunts below 1 Ω but worth checking for high-value sense resistors.
