2Mbps data rate — what it buys you on the bus
The 2Mbps data rate is the driver's switching ceiling. At this speed on an RS-485 bus, cable length is limited to roughly 400 metres before signal degradation from DC resistance and capacitance becomes a problem. For shorter runs — inside a cabinet or across a factory floor — 2Mbps clears most Modbus RTU, Profibus, and generic UART links comfortably.
