500 mV hysteresis keeps noise off the line
The receiver hysteresis is specified at 500 mV — that is the dead band between switching thresholds. In a noisy industrial environment or across a long cable run, this prevents the receiver from chattering on a slow or ringing RS232 signal. The trade-off is a slightly wider transition zone, but for 120 Kbps the margin is fine.
