The pre-driver high-side output configuration (2) means this part does not integrate power MOSFETs — it drives external N-channel FETs. That keeps the heat out of the controller and lets you scale the fan current by choosing appropriate FETs. The I²C/SMBus interface simplifies wiring: a single two-wire bus controls multiple fan channels without extra GPIOs.
