6 A buck-boost regulator with automotive temperature range
The LT8350RV#PBF from Analog Devices is a single-output, adjustable buck-boost regulator rated for 6 A continuous output. Its buck-boost topology maintains regulation when the input voltage dips below or rises above the programmed output — no dropout region to manage. The 3 V to 40 V input range covers automotive 12 V and 24 V systems, including cold-crank dips to 4.5 V and load-dump transients up to 40 V, without requiring an external clamp circuit.
Switching frequency and synchronous rectification
The switching frequency is programmable from 200 kHz to 2 MHz. At the low end, the inductor ripple current is smaller and conduction losses dominate; at 2 MHz, the inductor and output capacitor shrink to a footprint that fits a 6x4 mm LQFN layout, but switching losses in the FETs increase. Integrated synchronous rectification replaces the freewheeling diode with a low-Rds(on) FET, improving efficiency by 3-5% at high step-down ratios compared to an asynchronous buck-boost of the same current rating.
Package and thermal interface
The 32-lead TFQFN exposed-pad package (6x4 mm LQFN supplier device package) routes the thermal pad to the PCB ground plane. The positive output configuration and single feedback resistor divider set the regulation point.
ROHS3 compliant — the bill of materials contains no restricted substances under the current EU RoHS exemption list.
