Product details

Integrated isolated power in a single SOIC-16

The ADUM6402ARWZ is a 4-channel general-purpose digital isolator from the IsoPower and iCoupler series that integrates an isolated DC-DC converter on-chip. This means the part provides both signal isolation and a regulated, isolated output voltage from a single 16-SOIC package — no separate isolated power module needed on the BOM. The device uses magnetic coupling technology and is rated for 5000Vrms isolation, making it suitable for medical equipment, industrial motor drives, and grid-tied power converters where a reinforced insulation barrier is required.

Channel configuration and data rate

Four unidirectional channels are arranged as two on each side (inputs side 1 / side 2: 2/2), giving a balanced bidirectional isolation path for SPI, UART, or general-purpose GPIO isolation. The 1Mbps data rate is adequate for most sensor interfaces and control signals but is not intended for high-speed buses like USB or Ethernet. Propagation delay is 100ns max in both directions, with pulse-width distortion held to 40ns max — tight enough for PWM signals up to a few kHz without significant duty-cycle error.

25kV/µs CMTI — why it matters for motor drives and inverters

Common-mode transient immunity is specified at a minimum of 25kV/µs. In a motor-drive or solar-inverter application, the switching node of the IGBT or SiC FET can slam the ground reference of the secondary side by hundreds of volts in nanoseconds. A CMTI rating below 10kV/µs risks data corruption or latch-up; 25kV/µs gives comfortable margin for 600V to 1200V switching stages operating at 20–50 kHz.

Each side of the isolation barrier accepts a 3V to 5.5V supply independently, so a 3.3V microcontroller on one side can talk to a 5V sensor or relay driver on the other without external level translation.

Lifecycle and compliance

For production BOMs that require a dual-source hedge, the ADUM6403ARWZ (same package, 1/3 input split) is a functional alternate; for a non-isolated-power variant, the ADUM4401ARIZ drops the integrated DC-DC but keeps the same isolation rating and package footprint.

Frequently asked questions

Can ADUM6402ARWZ be used with a 3.3V supply on both sides?

Yes. The supply range is 3V to 5.5V on each side independently, so 3.3V on both the primary and secondary is within spec.

What is the difference between ADUM6402ARWZ and ADUM6400ARWZ?

The ADUM6400CRWZ has a 25Mbps data rate and a 4/0 input split (all inputs on side 1), whereas the ADUM6402ARWZ runs at 1Mbps with a 2/2 split. The ADUM6400 also has a faster 60ns propagation delay versus 100ns. Both provide integrated isolated power and 5000Vrms isolation.
