What the isoPower integration means for your BOM
The ADUM5403ARWZ is a 4-channel, unidirectional digital isolator from Analog Devices' IsoPower and iCoupler families. What sets it apart from a plain isolator is the integrated DC-DC converter: it generates an isolated output rail on the secondary side, so you don't need a separate isolated supply module or a transformer driver. That saves board area and cuts the component count in a multi-channel isolated interface — think PLC digital input modules, motor encoder feedback links, or RS-485/RS-422 isolation where the bus side needs its own power. The part is rated for 2500 Vrms isolation, which covers basic functional isolation in 24 V industrial systems and reinforced isolation in many medical and instrumentation applications. The 1 Mbps data rate is enough for most fieldbus and sensor interfaces (Profibus, Modbus at 115.2 kbps, or encoder pulse trains up to a few hundred kHz) but not for high-speed video or Gigabit Ethernet — that's not what this part is for.
25 kV/µs CMTI — why it matters on a motor drive
Common-mode transient immunity of 25 kV/µs (minimum) means this isolator can reject the fast voltage slew that couples across the barrier when an IGBT switches at 10–20 kV/µs. If you've ever seen a data glitch on an isolated SPI link that correlates with the PWM switching edge, the CMTI number is what fixes it. The ADUM5403ARWZ's 25 kV/µs rating is competitive for industrial drives and inverters.
Channel configuration and timing
Four unidirectional channels with a 1/3 input-side/side-2 split: one channel goes from the primary to the secondary, three go from the secondary back to the primary. That's a natural fit for an SPI-like interface where you have one data line out and three back (MISO, plus maybe a couple of status or fault lines), or for a UART with TX, RX, and two handshake signals. Propagation delay is 100 ns max in either direction, and pulse-width distortion is 40 ns max — tight enough for synchronous serial links at 1 Mbps. Rise and fall times are 2.5 ns typical, which keeps the signal edges clean without excessive ringing — important when the trace from the isolator to the connector is a few centimetres long.
Package and footprint
The wide body provides the creepage distance needed for the 2500 Vrms isolation rating — don't substitute a narrow SOIC footprint. The part is surface-mount only, so plan for reflow or selective solder.
