Two-channel isolation that doesn't add a second power rail
The ADUM1286ARZ is a 2-channel, unidirectional digital isolator from Analog Devices' iCoupler family, built around magnetic coupling rather than an optocoupler LED. It delivers 3000Vrms galvanic isolation across a 3V to 5.5V supply range, with one channel on side 1 and one on side 2 — a 1/1 input split that suits a single isolated signal pair (e.g., SPI clock and data, or a UART TX/RX). The 1Mbps data rate and 50ns max propagation delay keep timing tight for most industrial serial links, while the 25kV/µs common-mode transient immunity means it won't glitch on a motor-drive PWM edge.
Why 25kV/µs CMTI matters on a motor drive or PSU
Common-mode transients — fast voltage swings between the two ground planes — are the main failure mode for isolated data links in inverter-fed motor drives, switch-mode power supplies, and solar inverters. The ADUM1286ARZ's minimum 25kV/µs CMTI means the output stays valid when the ground plane jumps hundreds of volts in a few nanoseconds.
