JFET op-amp in a hermetic can — what the TO-99 package tells you
The AD506JH is a single JFET-input operational amplifier from Analog Devices, packaged in a TO-99-8 metal can — the hermetic through-hole package that has been the standard for military, aerospace, and high-reliability analog signal chains for decades. The JFET input stage gives it the high input impedance needed for precision integrators, sample-and-hold circuits, and photodiode preamps where bias current would otherwise corrupt the signal. With a supply span from 10 V to 40 V, this part works across ±5 V, ±12 V, and ±15 V rails without a BOM change.
If your BOM requires a part that holds its offset and gain across the full military temperature envelope, this is the grade tier to buy into.
Lifecycle and compliance: still in active production
Note the RoHS non-compliant marking: the TO-99 hermetic seal uses lead-based solder in the lid seal, which is exempt for high-reliability applications under most military and aerospace procurement contracts. If your program requires RoHS compliance, this part will not pass that screening.
For a part in this lifecycle stage — active, but in a legacy hermetic package — the independent channel is the reliable supply route, especially when you need date-code consistency across a production batch.
