The Toshiba TLP291(TP,SE is a single-channel transistor-output optocoupler in a 4-SOIC surface-mount package. It provides 3750Vrms of galvanic isolation between a DC input LED and a phototransistor output, making it a straightforward choice for breaking ground loops in industrial control, PLC I/O modules, and isolated sensor interfaces. The 4-SOIC footprint is a standard, widely used outline — you can swap it in the field with basic tweezers and a soldering iron, no hot-air station needed.
CTR range — the number that decides fit
The current transfer ratio spans 50% minimum to 600% maximum, both specified at a 5mA LED forward current. That wide spread means you need to design the load resistor and input drive for the worst-case minimum CTR, not the typical. At 50% CTR, 5mA in gives you 2.5mA of collector current — enough to drive a logic gate input or a small relay coil if the pull-up is sized right. The 600% ceiling tells you the part can saturate hard at higher LED currents, which matters for switching speed consistency.
Speed and drive — rise/fall and saturation
Typical rise and fall times are 2µs and 3µs respectively, with turn-on and turn-off both at 3µs. That puts this part in the general-purpose opto class — fine for 10kHz-ish switching or DC level shifting, but not for high-speed serial isolation. The Vce saturation maxes at 300mV, so the transistor pulls close to ground when fully on, which keeps the logic-low threshold clean for 3.3V and 5V CMOS inputs. Output can handle up to 80V and 50mA per channel, enough for driving a small solenoid or a solid-state relay input directly.
Temperature range and environment
Rated for -55°C to 110°C operating, this opto covers the full industrial temperature band and even some automotive under-hood zones where the ECU sees ambient heat soak. The 110°C ceiling is a practical limit — if your enclosure runs hotter than that, you need a higher-temperature-rated isolator. Storage temperature exceeds the operating range, so the part survives shipping and handling extremes without damage.
