Integrated half-bridge driver for small brushed DC motors
The Toshiba TB6552FNG,C,8,EL is a fully integrated brushed DC motor driver that packs the control logic and power MOSFETs into a single 16-SSOP package. It drives one bidirectional brushed DC motor using four half-bridge outputs configured for H-bridge operation, with a continuous output current rating of 800mA per channel. The load voltage range spans 2.5V to 13.5V, while the logic supply runs from 2.7V to 5.5V, so a 3.3V or 5V microcontroller can drive the PWM and serial control inputs directly without level translation.
800mA output — sizing the motor load
The 800mA continuous output current per channel sets the practical motor stall torque and steady-state current limit. For a brushed DC motor running at 12V load, 800mA delivers roughly 9.6W to the motor — enough for small gearmotors, peristaltic pumps, or cooling fans. Derating for ambient temperature up to 85°C is advisable; the package's thermal resistance in the 16-SSOP (4.40mm width) means sustained operation near the 800mA ceiling at high ambient may require airflow or a heatsink on the PCB copper plane. The power MOSFETs are integrated, so the designer does not need to size external FETs or worry about gate drive matching.
Logic supply and interface — 3.3V or 5V direct connection
The logic supply range of 2.7V to 5.5V covers both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller families without external level shifters. The control interface accepts PWM and serial inputs, so the MCU can set motor speed, direction, and braking through a simple two-wire or three-wire scheme. For 3.3V logic, the supply voltage can be set to 3.3V, keeping the logic thresholds compatible and reducing power dissipation in the control section. This makes the part a natural fit for battery-powered designs where the MCU runs at 3.3V and the motor sees a higher load voltage from a separate battery or boost converter.
Temperature grade: indoor and commercial environments
The -20°C to 85°C ambient operating range limits the TB6552FNG to consumer, commercial, and indoor industrial applications. For outdoor telecom enclosures or unheated warehouses, the -20°C lower bound may be marginal; a part with a wider temperature grade would be safer. The ROHS3 compliance confirms lead-free assembly compatibility for current-generation reflow profiles.
For new designs, the active status means no forced redesign in the near term. The reel options (Tape & Reel or Cut Tape) cover both volume production and prototype quantities.
Second-source option: TC78H611FNG,EL
For dual-sourcing or higher current requirements, the Toshiba TC78H611FNG,EL is a pin-compatible alternative. It uses the same 16-SSOP footprint and load voltage range (2.5V), but offers a higher continuous output current of 1.1A and a slightly wider operating temperature range starting at -30°C. The trade-off is that the TC78H611 has only two half-bridge outputs (one H-bridge) versus the TB6552FNG's four half-bridge outputs. Both accept PWM control and are suited for general-purpose brushed DC motor drives. If the BOM already qualifies the TB6552FNG, the TC78H611 can serve as a drop-in second source for builds needing extra current headroom, provided the PCB layout can handle the higher dissipation.
