Packing list generator

Customs and the freight forwarder work from the packing list: how many cartons, what is inside each one, the gross and net weight, and the carton dimensions from which the forwarder quotes freight. Enter the shipment details and the carton rows — dimensions are in centimetres and the volume is computed for you in cubic metres. It prints directly or saves as a PDF, and carries no prices.

Import cartons from a spreadsheet: .xlsx, .csv, .tsv or .txt. Looked-up columns: description, qty, gross weight, net weight, length, width, height (cm). Rows without a carton number get one assigned automatically.

Notes

Gross weight and carton dimensions drive the freight quote, so they should be close to reality — customs agents on either side compare this list against the goods and the B/L. The packing list carries no prices.

Ships with the proforma invoice of the same shipment. Working from a quotation or purchase order? Those tools turn your BOM into the invoice lines this list describes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a packing list used for?

It tells customs and the freight forwarder exactly what is in the shipment — carton numbers, quantities, weights and dimensions. The forwarder quotes freight from the volume and weight, customs checks it against the invoice, and the buyer confirms the goods arrived as listed.

Why is gross weight different from net weight?

Net weight is the weight of the goods themselves; gross weight includes the packaging — carton, filler, straps, pallet. Customs and airlines use gross weight for the freight calculation, so it is always the larger of the two numbers.

How is carton volume calculated?

Volume is length × width × height. The tool takes the dimensions in centimetres and converts to cubic metres automatically — a 60 × 40 × 30 cm carton is 0.072 m³. The forwarder uses the sum across all cartons to size the truck or container.

Do I need a packing list if I already have an invoice?

Yes — the two documents serve different readers. The invoice states values for payment and customs valuation; the packing list states physical details (cartons, weights, volume) that customs inspectors and the freight forwarder work from. Both travel with an international shipment.
