Through-hole TO-220-5 — board fit and thermal handling
The LP38858T-1.2/NOPB comes in a TO-220-5 package with formed leads, through-hole mount. That package choice matters: the TO-220 tab can be bolted to a heatsink or soldered to a large copper plane on the PCB, which is how you keep the junction below 125°C at 1.5A output when the dropout voltage is burning off a few hundred milliwatts. The formed leads sit flat on the board, so the part fits standard TO-220 footprints — no special land pattern needed. If you are retrofitting an older design that used a TO-220 linear regulator, this drops in mechanically.
Active production — no LTB risk on this BOM line
The LP38858T-1.2/NOPB carries an Active lifecycle status and is ROHS3 compliant. For a storeroom or a long-life industrial product, this part does not force a lifetime buy decision today. The ROHS3 compliance also means it ships lead-free, which is the standard for new builds in most markets.
Protection features and soft-start for controlled power-up
Built-in protection covers overcurrent, overtemperature, short-circuit, and undervoltage lockout (UVLO). The soft-start control feature limits inrush current during startup, which helps avoid a voltage dip on the input rail when the regulator powers a large capacitive load. That is a practical advantage if the 1.2V rail feeds a bank of decoupling caps on an FPGA or processor core — the soft-start prevents the upstream supply from sagging.
