What the voltage ratings mean for protection design
The 1.5SMC8.2CA M6G sits in the 1.5SMC family — surface-mount transient voltage suppressors that clamp transients on signal and power lines before the downstream IC sees them. The 7.02 V reverse standoff is the working voltage the line sits at without the TVS conducting; above that the Zener characteristic kicks in and the device clamps at 12.1 V maximum, protecting whatever is behind it. The downstream protection budget is set by that 12.1 V clamp ceiling: the IC above it needs to survive 12.1 V for the event duration, not the full surge amplitude. The breakdown minimum of 7.79 V sits just above the 8.2 V nominal rating — this is the turn-on threshold. The gap between standoff and breakdown is the allowed operating window, and the gap between breakdown and clamping is the TVS working region during a transient event.
Thermal headroom and the automotive/industrial temperature grade
Rated junction temperature runs to 150°C, which is notably higher than the commercial 0–70°C or industrial −40–85°C grade common on many surface-mount discretes. That headroom matters in enclosed panels or near heat sources where local ambient can run 100–120°C and the TVS sits on a thermal pad with limited copper spreading. A 150°C Tj ceiling gives the thermal designer real margin before derating kicks in.
Bidirectional protection and the CA polarity variant
The single bidirectional channel makes this suitable for AC-line protection or for protecting the positive and negative rails of a differential signal pair symmetrically. The CA suffix in the 1.5SMC series designates the bidirectional polarity variant — the C indicates bidirectional and the A denotes the voltage tolerance grade within the series.
The DO-214AB (SMC) is a flat, wide-body SMD package — the cathode bar is the large central pad, which needs adequate copper area on the PCB for thermal spreading. For a 1.5 kW TVS the recommended land pattern is on the aggressive side of the IPC-7525 footprint to keep junction-to-ambient thermal resistance low. The Tape & Reel packaging suits high-volume pick-and-place lines.
