Clamping voltage and the protection margin
The 1.5SMC30A V7G: The 41.4 V maximum clamping voltage at Ipp is the number that matters for downstream component survival. If the rail feeds a DC-DC converter with a 60 V abs-max input, the 41.4 V clamp leaves 18.6 V of headroom — comfortable margin. But if the protected device has a 45 V absolute maximum, the clamp sits only 3.6 V below the failure threshold, and the designer should verify the clamping waveform against the converter's surge rating. Real-world transients with faster rise times or longer duration shift the energy profile — the datasheet's peak-pulse-power derating curve (not reproduced here) governs the safe operating area for non-standard pulses.
