Product details

1500 W of surge protection in a DO-214AB package

The 1.5SMC15A M6G is a Zener-type TVS diode from Taiwan Semiconductor's 1.5SMC series, designed to clamp transients on general-purpose DC power rails and signal lines. The 12.8 V standoff means it sits across a 12 V rail without conducting in normal operation, but when a surge pushes the line above the 14.3 V minimum breakdown threshold, the diode avalanches and clamps the voltage to 21.2 V max — protecting downstream components rated for 24 V or less. The 1500 W rating at 10/1000 µs is the standard telecom surge waveform; for shorter pulses the device can absorb much higher peak currents.

Package and rework considerations

Housed in a DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package, the 1.5SMC15A M6G has a large copper tab on the bottom that acts as both the cathode connection and the primary heat path. The pad layout should match the recommended SMC footprint — the tab needs a generous copper area and thermal vias to pull heat into the board during a surge event. The package is well-suited for hand rework with hot air. The tab is large enough to heat evenly, and the body marking includes a clear cathode band — pin 1 orientation is unambiguous.
