Transient protection for 256V DC rails
The 1.5KE300CA B0G: The 256V reverse standoff voltage means the diode draws negligible leakage below that level, so it sits across the rail without loading the circuit during normal operation. When a surge exceeds the 285V minimum breakdown voltage, the device avalanches and clamps the spike to 414V maximum while shunting 3.8A of peak pulse current in the standard 10/1000µs waveform. The DO-201AA axial lead package solders into a through-hole board; the leads carry the surge current into the junction without the trace-width bottleneck you get with an SMD package on a two-layer board.
The 175°C upper limit means the junction can absorb the self-heating from a pulse without derating the peak power at elevated ambient, as long as the average power stays within the thermal resistance of the axial lead mounting. The bidirectional configuration clamps both polarities with a single device, which is the right call for AC-coupled signal lines or DC rails where the transient can ring positive and negative.
