TVS clamping and the 154 V rail it protects
The 1.5KE180A R0G: Its 154 V reverse standoff voltage means it sits across a DC rail up to that level without conducting leakage current; the rail stays live during normal operation. When a transient exceeds the 171 V minimum breakdown threshold, the device clamps at 246 V maximum, shunting up to 6.4 A of peak pulse current away from the downstream circuitry. The 1500 W rating at the 10/1000 µs pulse defines the energy it can absorb in a single event — a sustained overvoltage beyond that pulse width will exceed the device's safe operating area.
Package and board integration
Housed in a DO-201AA (DO-27) axial-lead package, the 1.5KE180A R0G is a through-hole part intended for point-to-point wiring or PCB mounting with the leads formed to the hole spacing. The DO-201 body handles the 1500 W pulse without cracking the encapsulation, but the lead-to-board solder joint must carry the full 6.4 A pulse current without fusing — a standard 1.0 mm diameter hole with adequate copper pad area on both sides is the baseline. The wide junction range also means the clamping voltage shifts with temperature — the 246 V max clamp is specified at 25°C; at the 175°C extreme the breakdown voltage rises roughly 0.1%/°C for a Zener structure, so the effective clamp moves higher.
Sourcing and compliance
The 1.5KE180A R0G is a general-purpose TVS diode with no power-line protection rating. It is intended for signal and low-power DC rail transient suppression, not for AC mains or high-energy surge applications where a higher-energy MOV or gas tube would be specified.
