What the ratings mean for a 24V or 48V automotive bus
The 1.5KE100AH is a Zener-type TVS diode, not a Schottky or a varistor — it clamps overvoltage transients by avalanching at a precise breakdown voltage, then recovers when the surge passes. The 85.5V reverse standoff means it can sit across a nominal 48V or 72V DC bus without conducting leakage current; the 95V minimum breakdown is where it starts to clamp. At the full 1500W peak pulse rating, the clamping voltage rises to 137V maximum while shunting 11.4A of peak pulse current in the 10/1000µs waveform. For a 24V automotive system, this part sits on a 24V rail with headroom to spare — the 85.5V standoff is well above the nominal bus, so it only activates during a load-dump or double-battery jump-start transient. On a 48V mild-hybrid bus, the 85.5V standoff is still safe, but the margin between the bus's maximum operating voltage (typically 54V) and the breakdown threshold is narrower — the TVS will conduct a small leakage current as the bus approaches the breakdown knee.
Automotive qualification and the temperature envelope
The unidirectional channel means it clamps only one polarity — the cathode band on the DO-201 package must be oriented toward the positive rail. For AC lines or bidirectional protection, the 1.5KE series offers bidirectional variants (suffix 'C' or 'CA') that clamp both polarities in a single package.
Board-fit and package reality for the DO-201 axial lead
The DO-201AA (DO-27) axial leaded package is a through-hole part — it does not reflow like an SMCJ or SMBJ surface-mount TVS. The leads are 1.3mm diameter tinned copper, designed for wave soldering or hand-soldering into plated through-holes. The body diameter is about 5.3mm and the overall length including leads is roughly 9.5mm; the lead spacing on the PCB should match the standard 0.400-inch (10.16mm) hole pitch for axial diodes. The 1500W pulse rating assumes the leads are soldered into a board with adequate copper area to sink the transient heat; a board with thin traces and no ground plane will have a higher effective thermal resistance, reducing the safe pulse power at elevated ambient temperatures.
Lifecycle and sourcing for BOM continuity
For volume production, the reel format feeds into axial insertion machines; for prototyping or low-volume builds, the parts can be cut from the reel or ordered in bulk tube packaging where available.
