A procurement lead at a Tier-1 EMS factory in Shenzhen emailed us last week with a one-line panic: every LDK120-class LDO and every M24C-series EEPROM on her 2027 build plan is being quoted at 40+ weeks. She had assumed the 6-inch fab exit was a 2028 problem. It is not. On July 31, 2026, Renesas confirmed it will phase out production at its Takasaki factory — its last 6-inch line — within two to three years, with R&D functions maintained (Business Wire, Jul 31, 2026). That confirmation landed the same week Tech Times reported the closure has already triggered an analog supply squeeze hitting automotive buyers (Tech Times, Jul 31, 2026), and finance.biggo noted aging 6-inch equipment and the EV demand slump as accelerants (finance.biggo, Jul 31, 2026). One week later, on August 4, 2026, Tech Times carried a related forecast that 2027 wafer price hikes would be steeper as a Singapore fab sold out (Tech Times, Aug 4, 2026). What Renesas actually announced — and why it matters to non-Renesas buyers

Renesas' official statement, distributed via Business Wire on July 31, 2026, is short and surgical: production at Takasaki will be phased out over two to three years, while R&D and engineering functions continue. The factory runs 6-inch wafers on legacy equipment that has been amortized for two decades. Renesas has decided the capex required to keep a 6-inch line alive is no longer defensible against the 8-inch and 12-inch capacity it is bringing online for power semiconductors at its Kofu 300mm fab (Renesas Electronics, Apr 2024). finance.biggo, reporting the same day, flagged the EV demand slump as a second accelerant — automotive analog IC order books at Tier-1s have already cooled, reducing the volume case for the mature line.

For buyers outside Renesas, the headline matters because Takasaki is not an isolated site. It is the last node in a 6-inch fab exit wave that has been running since 2024. Polar Semiconductor, a captive fab in the US Midwest, was carved out and recapitalized in late 2025 to remain operational (Electronics360, Nov 2025). ON Semiconductor has been migrating mature analog lines from 6-inch to 8-inch since 2022. Microchip Technology, after the 2023-2024 inventory correction, has been quietly shutting older fabs while expanding 8-inch partnerships with GlobalFoundries and TSMC. When Renesas — the most conservative Japanese analog house — admits the 6-inch node is dead, every 6-inch-sourced automotive and industrial analog part in the broader market moves to "last-cycle" pricing.

The secondary signal is wafer ASP. Tech Times, citing foundry executives in Singapore, reported on August 4, 2026 that 2027 wafer price hikes will be steeper than 2026's, and that a Singapore fab has effectively sold out its 2027 capacity window. This is the 8-inch BCD and HV-CMOS capacity that absorbs the analog lines Renesas is shutting. When 8-inch capacity is sold out, the price letter that hits automotive analog in Q4 2026 will not be the last of the year — it will be the first of the 2027 cycle. We expect STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and NXP to follow with their own Q4 letters within 90 days. What is actually tight — by manufacturer and confirmed catalog part

The squeeze is concentrated on parts that are designed in on 6-inch wafers and that have no second-source alternative. Below is what we are seeing on our sourcing desk, with confirmed catalog MPNs that procurement teams can immediately audit against their own BOMs.

STMicroelectronics has become the most visible pressure point. The third price hike of 2026, effective August 23, covers discrete power devices (MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC diodes) and select automotive LDOs (TrendForce, Aug 21, 2026). Power device lead times are reported at 52 weeks for the highest-volume SKUs. The OPA192IDR (36 V precision op-amp, score 95) and the INA190A1IRSWR (low-side current sense amplifier, score 95) are catalog parts we see ordered at 30+ week lead times on industrial buyer RFQs. TI's analog fabs in Dallas and Houston are mostly 8-inch, but TI pulls mature logic — including the SN74 logic family — from 6-inch partners. When those partners lose 6-inch lines, the SN74AUP and SN74LVC families will see lead-time stretch first.

Renesas parts in our catalog include the R5F100FEGFP#30 (RL78 family automotive MCU, score 95) and the R5F566NDDDFP#30 (RX family MCU, score 95). These are mature-node designs that today are sourced from a mix of Renesas' own fabs (including Takasaki) and partner foundries. Over the 2-3 year phase-out window, expect Renesas to consolidate production into its Kofu 300mm power semi line and partner foundries — meaning the physical MPN does not change, but the lead time on RL78 and RX parts climbs from 16 weeks today toward 30-40 weeks by mid-2027.

Microchip Technology is in the cleanest position of the four, having already rationalized its mature-node footprint during the 2023-2024 correction. The catalog tops for Microchip are ATF22V10C-5JX (classic PLD, score 95) and the ATF16V8CZ-15SU (score 95) — both legacy programmable logic that Microchip continues to support on its mature 6-inch partnership in Mountain View. Microchip's risk in 2027 is upstream: its foundry partner capacity, not its own fab.

onsemi (the former ON Semiconductor) rounds out the top five. Catalog tops include FOD817D (optocoupler, score 95), FOD817A300 (automotive-grade optocoupler, score 95) and the MOC3021TVM (triac driver optocoupler, score 95). These are 6-inch-era designs in their own fabs in Idaho and Czech Republic. onsemi has been migrating to 8-inch since 2022, so the lead-time pressure on these parts is more moderate than ST or Renesas, but pricing pressure on automotive-grade optocouplers in Q4 2026 is real.

How to buy in this market — seven procurement moves for Q4 2026

  1. Audit your 2027 BOM against the 6-inch exit list. Pull every analog IC on the BOM (LDOs, op-amps, EEPROMs, optocouplers, voltage references, current sense amplifiers, dual MOSFET drivers). Cross-reference each MPN against the catalog coverage above. Any part sourced from a known 6-inch fab — Renesas Takasaki, onsemi legacy lines, Microchip Mountain View partnership, ST older BCD lines — is on the watch list.

  2. Issue the LTA request before September 30, 2026. STMicroelectronics' third 2026 hike landed on August 23. We expect Q4 price letters from TI and NXP within 60 days, and from onsemi within 90. Buyers who wait for the next letter will be quoting against the next letter's letter. A pre-emptive LTA at current pricing locks both the price and the allocation slot.

  3. Dual-source automotive LDOs and op-amps where the second source is mature. For the LDK120-class LDO, drop-in alternatives exist in TI's TPS7A family and Microchip's MIC29150 family. For OPA192-class op-amps, TI's OPA202 and onsemi's NCV20032 are pin-compatible alternates that can be qualified in 60-90 days. Dual-sourcing does not eliminate the squeeze, but it prevents a single-letter shock from stopping the line.

  4. Treat date-code verification as mandatory. When mature-node analog goes into allocation, the spot market fills with 2022-2024 date codes repackaged as current lots. Every spot-quote MPN should arrive with the original manufacturer's label intact, the lot number traceable to the franchised distributor, and a CoC on request. Anything dated more than 18 months from the build date on a "new" lot is suspect.

  5. Pre-book a 6-month buffer, not 12. The temptation in a squeeze is to over-buy and hold. But 6-inch fab parts are going EOL — over-buying locks you into an obsolete inventory position by 2028. A 6-month buffer (about 26 weeks of normal demand) covers the next two letter cycles without committing to a dead part.

  6. Avoid "spot below-market" offers. When STMicro LDOs at 40-week lead times are quoted at $0.18 each on the spot market and the LTA floor is $0.42, the spot offer is either refurbished, remarked, or short-shipped. We see this pattern repeat every cycle. Verify the lot, verify the wafer foundry, and ask for the date-code photo before wire transfer.

  7. Lock your 8-inch alternative qualification now. Parts designed in for 2028-2029 should already be moving to 8-inch-fab equivalents where pin compatibility allows. The 8-inch BCD capacity is also tight, but at 30-week lead times instead of 52. Buyers who start the qualification clock today will be in production on 8-inch parts by Q3 2027.
