Product details

What this high-side switch does on the board

The STMicroelectronics VN5E050J-E is a single-channel high-side driver from the VIPower™ family, built to switch a grounded load on the high side of a supply rail. It replaces a discrete MOSFET plus driver and protection circuitry in one PowerSSO-12 package. The switch is controlled by a simple On/Off logic input (non-inverting) and requires no Vcc supply — the gate drive is self-supplied from the load voltage. Output configuration is N-channel, ratio 1:1. Rated for a load supply from 4.5 V to 28 V, it covers 12 V and 24 V automotive and industrial systems. The 50 mOhm max Rds(on) keeps conduction losses low enough that at 19 A continuous output the part stays within its SOA when the PCB copper is adequate.

The Auto Restart feature means the switch attempts to re-energise after a thermal fault once the junction cools, which is useful for intermittent overloads like lamp inrush or motor stall. The PowerSSO-12 package has an exposed pad for thermal dissipation to the board.

Frequently asked questions

What is the replacement for the VN5E050J-E?

A pin-compatible alternative within the VIPower family may exist, but it must be validated against the specific load current, Rds(on), and protection feature set of your design.

What is the Rds(on) of the VN5E050J-E?

The maximum Rds(on) is 50 mOhm, specified at the load voltage and temperature conditions in the datasheet. This sets the conduction loss floor for the 19 A output rating.
