Product details

Single-channel high-side driver for inductive and resistive loads

The STMicroelectronics VN5E025MJ-E is a VIPower™ single-channel high-side driver with an N-channel power MOSFET output. Built-in fault protection includes current limiting (fixed threshold), over-temperature shutdown, and over-voltage clamping — no external Vcc supply is required for the logic input, simplifying the BOM. The Auto Restart feature means the driver cycles on/off after a thermal fault, re-trying the load automatically once the junction cools below the reset threshold — useful for lamp inrush or motor stall recovery without software intervention.

25 mOhm Rds(on) and 43 A peak — load headroom for high-surge applications

The 43 A peak output rating handles lamp cold-start inrush, DC motor start-up, and capacitive loads well beyond the steady-state current requirement — but the actual continuous current is thermally limited by the board layout and ambient temperature.

STMicroelectronics no longer manufactures this exact variant in volume; new-production orders are not accepted from the factory. Available inventory is limited to stock already in the distribution channel. Confirm the BOM position and thermal budget before committing; the Auto Restart and fault protection set may not be identical on newer VIPower parts.

PowerSSO-12 footprint and thermal design

The datasheet recommends a minimum copper area on the top layer and via stitching to the ground plane to achieve the rated junction-to-ambient thermal resistance. Derate the continuous output current above the rated junction temperature per the thermal impedance curves in the datasheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the replacement for VN5E025MJ-E?

No official replacement or pin-compatible successor is listed for the VN5E025MJ-E on the manufacturer's record. For a functionally similar high-side driver in the VIPower family with comparable Rds(on) and protection set, review the current-generation VIPower M0-5 or M0-7 series — but verify pinout, package, and Auto Restart behavior against your BOM.

Does VN5E025MJ-E have overvoltage protection?

Yes, the VN5E025MJ-E includes over-voltage clamping as part of its fault protection set, along with current limiting (fixed threshold) and over-temperature shutdown.

How does the Auto Restart feature work in VN5E025MJ-E?

The Auto Restart feature automatically cycles the output on and off after an over-temperature fault. When the junction temperature exceeds the thermal shutdown threshold, the output turns off; once the junction cools below the reset threshold, the output turns back on, allowing the load to re-energise without a microcontroller reset or external logic.
