The part sinks up to 100 mA and requires only 700 µA cathode current to regulate.
Adjustable output — how the range works
The output voltage is set by a resistor divider from the cathode to the reference pin. The minimum fixed voltage is 2.495 V, and the maximum is 36 V. That range covers most low-voltage and mid-voltage regulation needs. The 100 mA output current is the sink capability, not a source: the TL431 pulls current to ground to regulate the voltage across the load and series resistor.
For dual-sourcing or a surface-mount alternative, the TL1431ACL5T is a functional second source with ±0.25% tolerance but a narrower temperature range (-20°C to 70°C) and surface-mount package.
