72W per channel into 2Ω — what that means for the install
The TDA7801 delivers 72W per channel into a 2Ω load across all four channels simultaneously. That rating sets the speaker impedance floor: running 4Ω or 8Ω speakers drops the output proportionally. Digital audio comes in via I²S, bypassing any external DAC and analog preamp stage. The I²C bus handles volume, mute, and diagnostic polling — useful for a head-unit or DSP controller that wants to read thermal or short-circuit flags without extra wiring. The mute and standby features let the system sequence power-up to avoid thumps.
Package and mounting — 27-Flexiwatt through-hole
The 27-Flexiwatt (formed leads) is a through-hole power package with a large metal tab for heat sinking. The vertical orientation variant (27-Flexiwatt Vertical) means the body stands upright on the PCB, which saves board area but requires enough clearance above the board for the tab and any clip-on heat sink. The formed leads are pre-bent for insertion — no manual lead forming needed on the line. Verify the PCB footprint matches the vertical tab layout before committing the layout.
Sourcing and procurement
The TDA7801 is sourced through independent distribution and quoted to order against an RFQ. For engineers evaluating the part, the datasheet covers the full thermal derating curves and application circuit — the I²C register map and I²S timing are documented there. For buyers, an RFQ will return the best available lead time and unit pricing across our supply network.
