16 GHz RF synthesizer with a bypassable PLL
The STUW81300TR is a single-circuit RF frequency synthesizer that clocks out to 16 GHz — that puts it squarely in Ku-band test equipment, microwave backhaul, and wideband instrumentation where the local oscillator needs to step across a multi-GHz span without swapping VCO modules. The PLL core includes a bypass mode: when the loop is open, the VCO runs free, which is useful for open-loop modulation or sweeping past the loop-bandwidth corner where the PLL's phase noise would otherwise dominate. Differential inputs accept LVDS or LVPECL levels, and the outputs are also differential — the signal stays in the current-mode logic domain end to end, so the layout sees a controlled 100-Ω differential impedance rather than a single-ended 50-Ω trace.
The supply rail spans 3 V to 5.4 V — wide enough to run off a 3.3-V or 5-V regulated bus without an extra LDO, though the PLL charge-pump and VCO core noise floor are sensitive to supply ripple, so a clean rail matters more here than on a digital part.
