Applications include OR-ing diodes in redundant supplies, freewheeling diodes in DC-DC converters, and reverse-polarity protection in automotive and industrial circuits where the junction temperature ceiling is 150°C.
STMicroelectronics lists the STPS8L30B as Obsolete. For existing BOM lines, supply runs through independent distribution and surplus inventory.
Forward drop and leakage — the Schottky trade-off
The 490 mV Vf at 8 A is low for an 8 A Schottky, which keeps junction temperature rise in check during continuous conduction. The trade-off shows up in reverse leakage: 1 mA at the 30 V rated reverse voltage. That leakage doubles with temperature, so standby power budgets in hot environments (85°C+ ambient) need to account for it. For OR-ing diodes where leakage matters less than forward efficiency, this part pulls ahead of a PN-junction rectifier. For ultra-low-leakage requirements, a higher-Vf Schottky or a FET-based ideal diode would be a better fit.
